Choosing Healthy Dog Food: A Label Checklist
There is a lot to read on a dog food pack. A few useful checks can make choosing a meal feel less confusing: what the food is for, what is in it and how it is meant to be fed.

1. Check what the product is for
Look for the intended life stage and whether the product is a complete food or a complementary addition. Treats and toppers should not be assumed to provide the same nutritional role as an everyday complete food.
2. Read the whole ingredient list
A front-of-pack flavour or protein claim is only part of the picture. Read the full list, especially if your dog needs to avoid an ingredient. Insect-containing food can also include chicken, liver, fish or other animal ingredients.

3. Find the feeding and calorie information
Check the serving guide and calorie information, and ask the manufacturer if a detail is missing. Your dog’s individual needs matter; a recommendation for another dog is not a serving guide for yours.
4. Ask about the people and checks behind the food
Useful questions include who formulates the recipe, what qualifications they have, how the finished food is checked and what research supports product claims. Specific answers are more useful than words such as “premium”.

5. Read storage and pack information
Before buying, check the pack size against your expected use. On delivery, read the storage instructions, date information and feeding directions on the pack. Keep those details available for future reference.
Meals, toppers and treats: know the difference
- Adult dog food: browse the adult Chicken & Rice range and compare pack sizes.
- Food toppers: compare products intended to be added to meals; follow their individual instructions.
- Dog treats: choose rewards for treat time and read the feeding directions for the specific recipe.
When your dog needs individual advice
If your dog has a diagnosed condition, a suspected food allergy or persistent digestive symptoms, a general shopping checklist is not enough to choose treatment. Your veterinarian can help you decide which diet is appropriate.
Cooking at home? Do not assume that adding a topper makes a home-cooked diet complete. Ask a veterinarian with appropriate nutrition expertise to assess the whole recipe.
