Insect Protein in Dog Food: A Guide to BSFL

Curious about the insect protein in your dog’s bowl? BSFL stands for Black Soldier Fly Larvae. It is one of the ingredients used in Boggo’s recipes, alongside other ingredients that vary by product.

This guide explains what BSFL is, what the research can tell us and what to check before choosing a recipe. Ready to browse? Explore our adult dog food.

What does “insect protein” mean?

In dog food, insect protein refers to protein sourced from insects. BSFL meal is a processed ingredient made from black soldier fly larvae. An ingredient can contribute to a recipe without being a complete diet on its own.

Insects are animals. “Insect protein” does not mean vegetarian, vegan or free from other animal ingredients. Boggo’s adult Chicken & Rice food includes chicken as well as BSFL; other products may contain liver, fish or other animal ingredients. Read the full ingredient list for the product you choose.

What does the research show?

A 2021 study in six healthy adult dogs compared a diet containing BSFL meal with a venison-based diet. Several nutrient digestibility measures were similar, while some differed. The researchers described BSFL as a promising alternative protein source and called for more research. Read the study by Penazzi and colleagues.

A separate 65-day study in 20 healthy beagles found that replacing part of the chicken meal with defatted BSFL protein reduced apparent protein digestibility compared with its control diet. Results depend on the formulation and the dogs studied. Read the 2022 beagle study.

These studies tested specific experimental diets, not Boggo’s finished products. They do not establish that every insect-containing recipe is easier to digest, prevents infection or treats allergies.

What if my dog has food sensitivities?

Check every ingredient, including other animal proteins. The presence of BSFL alone is not a guarantee that a recipe will suit your dog. If your dog has a diagnosed allergy or ongoing itching or digestive symptoms, ask your veterinarian to help choose an appropriate diet rather than relying on an ingredient claim.
